Mind the Gap - Gender Inequality in the Transportation Sector

4th March, 2022 Read time: Two minutes

There is no time more relevant to challenge female workplace inequality than during International Women’s Week and National Careers Week.

From 7-13th March, we will be celebrating all things career-based whilst challenging the areas that need to see further development. The transport sector is one of the most gender imbalanced sectors in the UK, with over 82% of total employees being male.

The share of women’s participation in the transport sector differs by mode, with one of the largest gender employment gaps found in the urban public transport sector. Women account for approximately only 18% of total employees on average, and represent less than 10% of tram drivers and other urban transport.

At Futures, we’re passionate about equality in the workplace and partner with organisations who share our vision for positive evolution in these areas.

During National Careers Week, we are working with Nottingham Trams Ltd to promote an exciting opportunity for Nottinghamshire residents to begin a career in tram driving.

“Nottingham Trams Ltd is an equal opportunities employer committed to equality of opportunity and diversity in employment, with 18.5% of our drivers being female, almost double national average. Applications are welcome from all sectors of the community, and we aim to recruit a diverse work force that reflects the people that we serve. We welcome applications from any candidate with appropriate skills and/or experience.”

As part of this partnership, applicants will be provided with full interview preparation during a short Employability course with Futures, followed by a guaranteed interview with Nottingham Trams Ltd.

Successful applicants will a receive competitive starting salary of £22,000, increasing to over £26,000 after the probation period, plus full training to become a Tram Driver.

If you’re interested in this career opportunity, come to our Information Day on 13th April at The Hub, 40 Friar Lane, Nottingham, NG1 6DQ.
